The Australia Hotel was originally constructed out of corrugated iron, but after a fire in 1898, it was replaced with the present two-storey stone building.

With its timber-framed verandah and decorative, pedimented brick parapet, it is a beautiful building. Restoration has been carried out over the past few years, which has returned the building to its former elegance.

The old hotel had a lively past, with events such as the fatal shooting of Ginger Sly by C. B. Kennedy in the Middle Bar in 1903, the discovery of alluvial gold when the original cellars were dug, and the arrest of William Coulter for the murder of Pittman and Walsh.

The hotel was built by Mr A. H. Golpin and was claimed to have been especially designed for hot climates. The contract building price was 10,000 pounds.
